Online 14.1: Pacific Storm Builds a Ridge over Western North America

300 mb:
Changes in the flow pattern at 300 mb show migration of troughs and ridges as they build and move across the United States. A strong ridge over the western United States in winter leads to bitter cold surface temperatures in the central and eastern United States.

Sea Level Pressure:
Persistent low pressure in the eastern half of the U.S. brings cold air advection to the middle of the country. The cold advection reinforces the cold air associated with the broad high pressure in the west and midwest during the latter half of the period.
