Infrared Satellite of Tropical Atlantic -
Atlantic Ocean tropical weather for a 20-day period from 11 to 30 September 2000, the heart of the hurricane season. Six tropical
cyclones develop during this time period, including two that grow to category 4 hurricanes. As you watch these animations, note the cloud
clusters over the Atlantic that do not grow into tropical storms. These tropical disturbances are associated with easterly waves, but the
environment in their vicinity wasn’t right for cyclone development. Tropical storm Helene was a great example – the clouds that formed Helene
cross the entire Atlantic without developing a significant circulation. Helene only developed tropical storm intensity in the Gulf of Mexico and never
became a hurricane. Contrast this with Hurricane Keith, which barely moved at all. It intensified to category 4 before making landfall along a remote
region of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula.
