Online 15.1: The Great Plains Blizzard of November 1995 Sea Level Pressure & Satellite -
Maps of surface station observations and surface isobars overlain with infrared satellite imagery provides illustration of a strong cyclone that developed lee (east) of the Rocky Mountains and created blizzard conditions in Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota. Recall that blizzards typically develop north and west of the surface low pressure center (identified by the isobars [cyan colored lines]). A comma cloud associated with the cyclone is evident in the latter stages of the animation as the cyclone reaches maturity.
