Surface pressure pattern and thickness of 1000-500mb layer: - A 10-day sequence of surface analyses at 12Z showing a cold polar outbreak. Surface air temperatures fell well below 0° F over the Northern Plains states bringing the lowest temperature of the winter of 2001-2002 to many locations in the eastern half of the United States.
