300mb Heights & Winds - The sequence of 300mb maps clearly shows the polar and subtropical jetstreams at the beginning of the animation; each has a jetstreak embedded within its circulations. During the animation, the jetstreams merge and by 31 December a trough and jetstreak positioned in the base of the trough is located over the east coast of the United States. The strong divergence this created supported a strong surface low pressure system - a Nor’easter.
