Forecasting and Simulating Severe Weather

Online 4.1: Uncertainties in Numerical Prediction Models

Precipitation Forecasts - Each image in the animation is a forecast for the total precipitation (in centimeters) on 2/04/2007. Note the sometimes significant differences in the day-to-day forecast, due in part to model uncertainties. Particular features are apparent throughout the animation including the linear precipitation (associated with a front) extending from the Gulf of Mexico across Florida into the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the large region of precipitation over eastern Canada and the North Atlantic Ocean.
