Forecasting and Simulating Severe Weather

Online 4.1: Uncertainties in Numerical Prediction Models

850 mb Heights and Temperature - This animation shows the forecast of 850 mb air temperature over North America for 2/04/2007 over an eight-day period. (Each map is a forecast for 2/04/2007 made for the eight-days prior.) The color coding indicates air temperature in degrees Celsius. Note the slight differences in the daily forecasts. Actual conditions on 2/04/2007 included extremely cold air over Southern Canada and the Northern Plains of the United States. Compare the location of the coldest air at 850 mb with the heights of the 300 mb pressure surfaces provided in another animation. You should find that the coldest air is co-located with the lowest 300 mb heights.
