Maps of the upper atmosphere provide clues as to surface conditions. This animation of 300mb maps
during a strong storm in April 2001 provides clues as to how the upper atmosphere, including the jetstream,
evolved and influenced surface conditions. The white lines are height contours and the color coding is wind
speed. The region of fastest wind speeds represents the jetstream and an embedded jetstreak.
